COURSE TOUR

Federal is a fair but strong test for golfers of any ability.  It rewards good golf.

Ist HOLE - Par 5                               (Blue) 501m, (White) 473m, (Red) 486m

A gentle dogleg left opening hole, slightly downhill from the tee to the bend with a deep menacing bunker on the left of the fairway at the corner.  Really long hitters may clear the bunker but you'll be punished if you don't.  Watch out for the irrigation pond on the left had side which can punish a wayward second shot. At the bend the fairway dips further before an incline to the green with bunkers on both sides.

2nd HOLE - Par 4                              (Blue) 369m, (White) 357m, (Red) 274m

A pleasant undulating gentle dogleg right. Tee shots that miss the fairway to the right or left usually find tree trouble. The green is visible from the bend with two shallow bunkers on the topside front right, and a deeper bunker on the lower side front left of the green. To the rear and left there is steep embankment running down from the green.

3rd HOLE - Par 3                                   (Blue) 173m, (White) 150m, (Red) 154m

A challenging straight hit from an elevated tee across a valley to a green protected by substantial bunkers to both sides.  This hole rewards bold play from the tee, so don't be caught short.

4th HOLE - Par  4                               (Blue) 342m, (White) 323m, (Red) 302m

A slight dogleg left with a shallow bunker on the right and a deeper bunker on the left of the fairway at the bend for the longer tee shots.  From the bend there is a steep incline to an elevated green with 2 bunkers to the right and a grass pot bunker front left.  A challenging second shot.  From the green there are beautiful views of the Brindabella ranges.

5th HOLE - Par 4                               (Blue) 318m, (White) 287m, (Red) 322m

A short but tricky hole.  The fairway slopes gently right to left.  Whilst the green is not visible from the tee, the flag can often be spotted.  An accurate tee shot is required to avoid trees on the right and left.  Shallow bunkers on the topside to the right and a deeper bunker on the lower left of the green provide a narrow entrance and penalise the wayward second shot.  There is a steep slope off the rear and the left side of the green.

6th HOLE - Par 4                                (Blue) 408m, (White) 402m, (Red) 292m

A wide, straight fairway slopes gently from left to right.  Bunkers protect both sides of the opening to the green but the front left bunker is not visible until players are close to the green.  At index 4, par is a very good result.

7th HOLE -  Par 5                              (Blue)  459m, (White) 444m, (Red) 446m

A dogleg left with a large bunker on the left of the fairway at the bend. The irrigation pond on the right hand side is in play for any wayward approach shots to the green. The fairway crests there to reveal a narrow entrance to a tiered green protected by two bunkers on the right and one bunker front left of the green. Swales left of the green provide additional problems for the wayward shot.

8th HOLE - Par 3                              (Blue) 155m,  (White) 125m, (Red) 138m

A water carry of about 50 metres and an approach to a heavily bunkered green, demands a bold tee shot. Anything short is punished.  The entrance is narrow and the green is deceptively long.

9th HOLE - Par 4                                (Blue) 370m, (White) 355m, (Red) 351m

A tough par-4 by any measure.  From the blue tees the hole doglegs to the left around a large eucalypt dominating the left side of the fairway and well within driving range.  (From the red tee behind the 8th green the hole is straight.) The fairway slopes from right to left, levelling out on the approach to a tiered, sloping green with bunkers set to the left.  Two good shots are required to get there in regulation.  Our index 2 hole.  You'll discover why!

10th HOLE Par 4                               (Blue)  406m, (White) 387m, (Red) 351m

Glorious views.  A long, straight downhill fairway slopes from left to right and demands placement off the tee.  Bunkers protect both sides of the entrance to the green. The bank at the rear of the green slopes away steeply.  A nice hole for straight hitters.

11th HOLE - Par 4                             (Blue)  331m, (White) 321m, (Red) 324m

A charming dogleg left, uphill from the bend midway along the fairway to an elevated green. A deep bunker protects the front right of the green. The green backs onto the Red Hill Nature Reserve.

12th HOLE - Par 3                              (Blue) 197m, (White) 184m, (Red) 147m

This is a testing hole for any level of golfer.  It requires a solid tee shot from an elevated tee across a gully to an elevated green protected by a deep bunker to the front right and grass swales to the left and around the rear of the green.  Index 3 on the course, it has a well-deserved high ranking and rewards bold play from the tee.

13TH HOLE - Par 5                            (Blue) 470m, (White) 450m, (Red) 400m

A nice par-5 with a slight dogleg right.  Drive across a gentle valley to the bend from where a slight downslope becomes a gentle incline to the green. Bunkers on both sides of the fairway protect the approach to the green. A deep bunker guards the green front right.  You'll hope to score well here.

14th HOLE - Par 4                              (Blue) 375m, (White) 356m, (Red) 316m

A challenging dogleg left requiring two well-hit shots to get there in regulation. The drive is from an elevated tee downhill to the bend.  Longer hitters may cut the corner but there is a shallow bunker on the right of the fairway if the long tee shot is not straight.  A gentle rise to a green protected by large bunkers to the front left and front right.  You'll be pleased to walk off here with par.

15th HOLE - Par 4                             (Blue) 350m, (White) 308m, (Red) 321m

A dogleg right requiring a well-placed tee shot for a clear approach to the green.  Drive from an elevated tee to the bend where there is a shallow bunker on the right.  A steep incline to an elevated, tiered green protected by bunkers front right and left requires judgment. There is another bunker to left rear of the green.  An extremely attractive hole with plenty of bite.

16th HOLE -Par 3                               (Blue) 135m, (White) 147m, (Red) 130m

This short hole is slightly downhill from the tee to a heavily bunkered green. To the rear a steep bank falls away from the green.  Definitely a sleeper.

17th HOLE - Par 5                              (Blue) 504m, (White) 497m, (Red) 412m

Lovely views from this hole too.  Drive uphill to a crest, past a fairway bunker on the left, and from there the fairway turns slightly to the right, leaving a gentle downhill run to the green.  The five greenside bunkers are there for a reason so take care.  There is a gentle left to right bias on the fairway. Play it smart and you'll be rewarded.

18th HOLE - Par 4                             (Blue) 385m, (White)  328m, (Red) 328m

This is our index 1 hole and the toughest par-4 in the district for golfers at any level.  Gently uphill all the way too.  A strong, well-placed drive left of centre to the dogleg right will leave you with a demanding shot to an elevated, sloping green guarded by two deep bunkers with sharp teeth.  The steeply banked entrance to the green provides added protection for this very challenging
